Dakh Daughters

Born in Kyiv within the Dakh theatre scene, Dakh Daughters took shape in 2012 as a female septet at the crossroads of live performance and concert. The group develops a universe of punk cabaret and staged folk, nourished by traditional Ukrainian music, spoken word, rap-like passages, and multilingual vocal work. On stage, Dakh Daughters circulates roles and instruments, giving their creations a choral dynamic and a constant tension between singing, acting and performance. The project initially emerged within GogolFest, then quickly circulated in Ukraine and Europe, notably in France, where the group has performed since 2012 and toured more widely from 2014. Their repertoire also draws on literary texts, with borrowings from Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Shakespeare, Joseph Brodsky, Charles Bukowski or Alexander Vvedensky. Several members of Dakh Daughters are also linked to the artistic ecosystem of the Dakh Theatre and to other projects arising from this scene, including DakhaBrakha. In terms of discography, Dakh Daughters released the album If in 2016 and then Air in 2019, extending on record an aesthetic where dramatic tension, polyphony, acoustic arrangements and stage writing mingle.
