Based in Boone, North Carolina, Cigarettes @ Sunset occupies the meeting point of Americana, indie rock, Appalachian folk and a roots rock with soul inflections—a blend the band itself calls "Possum Rock." This five-piece led by Garrett Dellinger builds its songs around direct vocals, gritty guitars, a tight rhythm section and a violin that links rock songwriting to textures from the Appalachian tradition. Cigarettes @ Sunset developed within an independent context, creating music geared for the stage and a sound that retains a raw edge without smoothing the rough edges between folk, country rock and indie. Local roots are central to the band's identity, both in their origin in the North Carolina mountains and in the impact of Hurricane Helene’s passage in 2024 on Boone and its region—an episode that marked the band's recent trajectory.
