Magic City Hippies

Formed in Miami, Florida, Magic City Hippies brings together singer-guitarist Robby Hunter, drummer-producer Pat Howard, and guitarist John Coughlin around a blend of indie pop, funk, and psychedelic rock, imbued with a laid-back, summery atmosphere. The project first took shape when Robby Hunter made a name for himself as a solo act in Miami’s streets and bars, before evolving into a full band—initially as the Robby Hunter Band and, by the mid-2010s, under the name Magic City Hippies. The group broke onto the indie scene with the 2015 EP “Hippie Castle,” which established their signature mix of funk grooves, psych-tinged guitar lines, hip-hop flourishes, and accessible pop melodies. The 2019 album “Modern Animal” cemented that direction with broader production and a strong focus on mid-tempo atmospheres, while 2022’s “Water Your Garden” extended the aesthetic by emphasizing the contrasts between uptempo tracks and more contemplative cuts. Active across American stages, Magic City Hippies crafts a repertoire tailored as much for the live experience as for intimate listening, aligning with an indie-funk current where vintage influences intersect with contemporary alternative pop.
