Mari Froes

Based in Goiânia in the state of Goiás, Brazil, Mariana Froes, also known as Mari Froes, develops a project centered on singer-songwriter music, at the crossroads of contemporary Brazilian popular music (MPB), intimate folk and an aesthetic close to bedroom pop. She first gained attention in the late 2010s thanks to videos recorded at home in which she covered classics and more recent pieces from the Brazilian repertoire. Gradually, Mari Froes has built a repertoire of original compositions that continue this focus on a soft voice, acoustic guitar and pared-down arrangements. Her approach relies on relatively slow tempos, a prominent use of Portuguese vocals and a sensitivity to nuance, situating her songwriting in continuity with MPB while opening it to indie influences. Active on the independent scene, Mari Froes alternates single releases and occasional collaborations, both online and on stage, and draws on an audience born from social networks to spread her songs beyond Goiânia.
