The Fabulous Thunderbirds

Formed in the mid-1970s in Austin, Texas, The Fabulous Thunderbirds follow the Texas blues tradition, blending electric blues, rhythm and blues, rock ’n’ roll and soul influences. Centered on singer and harmonica player Kim Wilson and guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, the band first built a reputation on Austin’s club circuit—especially around Antone’s—before recording a series of albums that shaped a sound mixing Texas shuffle, touches of Chicago blues and rock energy. Early records like Girls Go Wild (1979) and T-Bird Rhythm (1982) put The Fabulous Thunderbirds on the international blues map, while Tuff Enuff (1986) emphasized a more direct blues-rock, driven by tight rhythmic work and streamlined guitar riffs. After Jimmie Vaughan left in the early 1990s, Kim Wilson kept the name The Fabulous Thunderbirds with new guitarists and rhythm sections, at times steering the band toward a more roots-rock and soul-blues direction, as on Roll of the Dice (1995), Painted On (2005), On the Verge (2013) and Strong Like That (2016). Still centered on Wilson’s gritty vocals and harmonica, The Fabulous Thunderbirds continue to explore an electric blues rooted in the Texas heritage while remaining open to more contemporary forms of rhythm and blues.
