Ressu Redford

Born in Turku, Finland in 1961 under the name Esa Pentti Juhani Mäkelä, Ressu Redford first established himself in the 1980s with Bogart Co., a Finnish pop‑rock outfit tied to the synthetic, dance‑oriented aesthetics of the era. After this initial phase in a group, Ressu Redford began a solo career around the early 1990s in a register that fuses pop, melodic rock, dance and iskelmä, the Finnish schlager tradition, with songwriting centered on choruses, adaptations and ballads. His solo discography notably includes Ressu (1990), Laulussa on helppo rakastaa (1991), Taas aurinko nousee (1993), Soolo (2001), Tuhat syytä (2006) and Hölmä sydän (2021), as well as several compilations such as 36 kuuta & Saturnuksen renkaat (2002). In parallel, Ressu Redford also participated in other collective projects, notably Boozin Bang N Dance Crew at the end of the 1980s and later Sound of R.E.L.S. in the mid‑1990s, in a more dance‑oriented vein. His career also includes work as a composer and lyricist for other artists, as well as more occasional collaborations, for example with Jussi Rainio on the albums R&J (2009), Klassikot (2010) and Elämästä seonneet (2014). A regular figure on the Finnish popular scene for several decades, Ressu Redford navigates between song, studio pop and radio formats without breaking with his 1980s roots.
