Amr Diab

Born in Port Said, Egypt, in 1961, Amr Diab established himself from the 1980s on the Egyptian music scene before broadening his audience to the entire Arab world with Arabic pop nourished by dance rhythms, oriental arrangements and Mediterranean influences. Trained at the Cairo Academy of Arts, he released his first album in 1983 and continued to issue records throughout the following decades, evolving his repertoire from a very rooted Egyptian variety in step with its era toward a writing more open to flows between international pop, Middle Eastern melodies and Latin grooves. The turning point of his career came with Nour El Ain in 1996, an album that gave international visibility to this aesthetic often described as Mediterranean. He then continued this work on Amarain in 1999, Tamally Maak in 2000, Aktar Wahed in 2001, Leily Nahary in 2004, Kammel Kalamak in 2005, Wayah in 2009, El Leila in 2013, Shoft El Ayam in 2014, Ahla W Ahla in 2016, Kol Hayaty in 2018, Sahran in 2020, Ya Ana Ya La in 2020 and Makanak in 2023. Over this long career, Amr Diab has also multiplied collaborations across the Arab and Mediterranean space, while remaining linked to major regional stages and to a pop-song format that blends direct refrains, soft timbres, a dancing pulse and melodic sentimentality.
