Lute

Emerging from Charlotte, North Carolina’s rap scene, Lute crafts a hip-hop sound marked by soul-inflected instrumentals and boom-bap, with storytelling firmly rooted in his city’s everyday life. Born Luther Nicholson in 1989, he first drew attention in the early 2010s with the mixtape “West1996,” which established his introspective world—between memories of youth, references to the American South, and observations of social realities. Spotted by J. Cole’s Dreamville label, Lute joined the roster in the mid-2010s and appeared on the compilations “Revenge of the Dreamers II” (2015) and “Revenge of the Dreamers III” (2019), securing his place in the U.S. rap landscape. His debut studio album, “West1996 pt. 2” (2017), continued the mixtape’s approach with writing focused on family, precarity, and how Charlotte shapes his perspective. With “Gold Mouf” (2021), Lute refines a style where soul loops and measured tempos support more detailed lyrics about fatherhood, mental health, and the artist’s place in the industry, while remaining true to a 1990s rap aesthetic. Active on stage alongside Dreamville artists and on streaming platforms, Lute has gradually established himself as a distinctive voice in North Carolina rap, balancing classic heritage with personal songwriting.
