Dead Calm

Under the name Dead Calm, Liam McCay develops one of his side projects most directly tied to his slowcore universe. Born in Galway and raised in Buncrana, County Donegal, this Irish musician has been active since 2022 and releases music under several aliases, including Sign Crushes Motorist, Birth Day and Take Care. Dead Calm occupies an aesthetic at the crossroads of indie rock, lo-fi and slowcore, with tracks built around slow tempos, muted guitars and intentionally spare songwriting. The project extends Liam McCay’s working approach: he distributes compositions across different identities while maintaining the same taste for short, melancholic and minimalist forms. Under the Dead Calm alias, McCay released the album Accept in 2023, followed by Keep Moving in 2025. Dead Calm thus holds a distinct place in Liam McCay’s discography, while remaining coherent with the independent scene and the intimate aesthetic that run through all his projects.
