Brian McKnight

Born in Buffalo, New York, in 1969, Brian McKnight built a career as a singer, songwriter, and producer at the crossroads of contemporary R&B, soul, and pop. Raised in a family steeped in gospel, he came to prominence in the early 1990s with his self-titled debut album, released in 1992, which established him on the American R&B scene. His discography has since spanned several decades, notably with Anytime in 1997 and Back at One in 1999, followed by a series of albums in which he explores R&B ballads, quiet storm textures, and formats closer to adult contemporary, leading up to projects such as Exodus in 2020. McKnight’s style centers on a tenor voice foregrounded in melody-driven compositions, frequent use of vocal harmonies, and slow to mid tempos, while occasionally incorporating pop or jazz elements. Alongside his recordings, he has collaborated extensively in the studio and on stage with other North American R&B and pop artists and has made occasional television and radio appearances, extending his activity beyond recordings alone.
