Sara Parkman

Born in 1989 in Västernorrland County, Sweden, Sara Parkman has developed a practice situated between Swedish folk tradition, contemporary writing and stage forms, with violin and voice at its center. After time in Rättvik and later Härnösand, and training that includes Swedish folk music, she emerged in the 2010s with an approach where melodies from the traditional repertoire intersect with electronic textures, choral arrangements, a pop sensibility and a marked interest in ritual or liturgical forms. Following several years of touring and collective projects, she released Sara Parkmans skog under her own name in 2016, and Matriarkerna in 2017 with Samantha Ohlanders. With Vesper (2019) Parkman deepened a broader, at once folk, experimental and spiritual compositional voice. Her discography also includes Funeral Folk, made with Maria W Horn, and Eros Agape Philia, both released in 2022. In parallel she collaborates with artists such as Silvana Imam, Fever Ray, Bob Hund and Seinabo Sey, composes for the stage and works with Riksteatern, which underscores a body of work where music regularly engages with theatre, poetry and collective concerns.
