Sunnan

Born in Sweden during the pandemic, Sunnan brings together five musicians around a project shaped in Sunnanhed, where a shared workplace and an encounter with a figure from Stockholm’s 1990s rave scene helped define the group’s initial contours. Sunnan develops an aesthetic the collective calls “spaghetti soul,” at the intersection of film music, dust-tinged soul and arrangements inspired by the imagery of the Italian western. Sunnan’s sound favors broad, melodic and cinematic atmospheres, with writing that stages a dialogue between soul warmth, instrumental tension and soundscapes evoking film scores. The project occupies a hybrid register between orchestrated pop, instrumental music and references to the grand settings of European cinema. Emerging in the early 2020s, Sunnan presents this distinctive musical language through a first cycle of tracks that lay the foundations of its identity, nourished both by the Swedish scene and by a collective approach to composition.
