The Dark Tenor

On 9 January 2027 The Dark Tenor brings his crossover project to the Metropol Theatre Bremen. Behind the name is the tenor Billy Andrews, who grew up in Germany and now lives in Berlin; he is classically trained and active as both a singer and a songwriter. His approach is to translate motifs from opera and symphonic music into contemporary pop songs — with clear choruses, distinctive rhythms and a stage concept that adopts a dark, theatrical aesthetic.

Since Symphony of Light (2014), Nightfall Symphony (2016) and Symphony of Ghosts (2018), he has been deepening this blend. Live, the set fluctuates between chamber-music moments and arrangements that lean toward orchestral rock. Often accompanied by an orchestra, choir or smaller ensemble, the tenor voice remains the fixed point that holds the classical quotations together.

The focus is on reinterpretations of well-known themes — for example from the Romantic repertoire or in cycles around Beethoven — condensed into compact songs. In Bremen, classical heritage meets contemporary pop formats: aria fragments, open sonic spaces, electronic accents and guitars interlock without obscuring the core of the melodies. The programme relies on the voice, the narrative concept and a clear visual signature.
