Young Thug

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Jeffery Lamar Williams, aka Young Thug, established himself in the early 2010s in the wake of the local rap scene with a trap and Southern hip-hop approach based on highly modulated vocals, stretched phrases, frequent use of singing, and a writing style that was more rhythmic than narrative. After the mixtape series I Came from Nothing, Young Thug drew attention with 1017 Thug in 2013, followed by the tracks “Stoner” and “Danny Glover” in 2014. His trajectory also developed through collaborations with Rich Gang, T.I., Kanye West, Drake, Future, or Camila Cabello, which broadened his audience while maintaining a strong anchor in Atlanta’s aesthetics. Between melodic rap, minimalist trap, and more adventurous tracks, Young Thug developed an unstable and highly mobile style, sensitive to timbre variations, oblique refrains, and changes of register. The projects Barter 6 (2015), Jeffery (2016), Beautiful Thugger Girls (2017), followed by the albums So Much Fun (2019), Punk (2021) and Business Is Business (2023) mark different stages of this evolution. Alongside his solo career, Young Thug organized the collective YSL, which became an important relay for Atlanta’s new generation of rap. His recent career has also been marked by a long legal case in Georgia, which interrupted and then redefined the pace of his career.
