Nick Hakim
Born in Washington, D.C. and based in New York, Nick Hakim has developed since the early 2010s a body of work that sits between neo-soul, alternative R&B, psychedelic soul and dreamy pop, marked by a flexible voice and arrangements that are often misty, slow and textured. Coming from a family with Chilean and Peruvian roots, he began singing in a church choir before studying at Berklee College of Music, then self-released his first tracks with the EPs Where Will We Go (Part I) and Where Will We Go (Part II) in 2014. His debut album, Green Twins, appeared in 2017, followed by Will This Make Me Good in 2020, where his R&B approach opened further toward experimentation, introspective moods and forms close to sound collage. In 2021, he issued Small Things with Roy Nathanson and Onyx Collective, reinforcing his ties to a New York scene at the intersection of jazz, soul and improvisation. Cometa, released in 2022, continues this evolution with a lighter, more organic songwriting style. He has also collaborated with Terence Nance, Erykah Badu, Lil Yachty and Adrianne Lenker, and regularly appears in contexts where song, independent R&B and exploratory music meet.
