Akon
Born in Saint‑Louis, Missouri, and raised between New Jersey and Senegal, Akon developed a musical identity shaped by a constant exchange between American and African cultures. As a singer, songwriter and producer, he rose to prominence in the mid‑2000s on the American R&B and hip‑hop scene with the album Trouble (2004), noted for its melodic songwriting and frequent use of autotune. He followed with Konvicted (2006) and Freedom (2008), projects in which his hip‑hop‑tinged R&B gradually opened to pop and dance sounds while expanding collaborations with artists from rap, mainstream pop and the European electronic scene. He then broadened his career as a producer and label executive — notably via Konvict Muzik and KonLive — contributing to the promotion of new talent. From 2010 onward his work shifted toward a more global aesthetic blending American urban influences with African rhythms, a trend affirmed on the albums El Negreeto and Akonda (2019), where he strengthened the ties between afro‑pop, contemporary R&B and club-oriented styles. Alongside his releases, Akon has remained active on international stages and engaged in various entrepreneurial and humanitarian initiatives connected to the African continent.
