At the Retro Waves – 80s & 90s Festival, on July 3, 2027, at the Sea Stage in Bremen, a band on the bill that decisively helped shape British pop of the eighties: Level 42. Having started in the late 1970s on the Isle of Wight, Mark King, Mike Lindup, and the others first emerged with a jazzy-funk sound that lives mainly in the buoyant groove and King's distinctive bass playing. Over time, songs, vocals, and clear pop structures moved more to the foreground, without the band losing its joy in playing and the relaxed precision from the early fusion days. Live, Level 42 hits this mix of funk, New Wave, and the slick 80s aesthetic exactly at the point: tight, melodic, with room for the big choruses and for moments when the band briefly veers back toward jam. Anyone who has the World Machine to Running in the Family era in mind will get a good opportunity here to recapture that sound on a large festival stage. More acts have been announced.
