Info

On September 9, 2026, at The Opera House in Toronto, saxophonist and composer Colin Stetson joins Scottish smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul for a meeting of breath, drones and living tradition. Stetson, long based in Montréal, pushes the bass sax to its edges: circular breathing, grainy overtones, sung tones and percussive keywork fold into evolving patterns that are as physical as they are precise. His solo language moves between pared‑back figures and dense rhythmic swells, tracing lines to avant‑jazz, minimalism and contemporary composition, all carried by the raw presence of air driven through metal.

Rooted in Gaelic repertoire, Chaimbeul recenters the Scottish smallpipes with a sound built on steady drones, modal tunes and subtle ornament. She leans into the instrument’s continuous airflow, drawing long phrases and shifting harmonies touched by Highland, Irish, Nordic and Balkan currents. Traditional material opens onto an understated, exploratory space where melody and texture share the lead.

Together they find common ground in resonance and pulse: bass‑sax overtones weaving through smallpipes drones, folk contours braided with minimalist cycles, music that expands patiently without losing grip. A focused, close‑listening encounter at The Opera House, Toronto, on September 9, 2026.
