Info
Tinariwen bring the pulse of the Sahara to Edinburgh on 21 May 2026 at Assembly Rooms. Pioneers of desert blues — which they call assuf — the Tuareg collective forged its sound on the road and in exile, trading rifles for guitars in the 1990s uprisings. Their songs tell of distance, freedom and survival, carried by interlaced electric guitars, hand percussion and voices that ride a steady groove.
On stage, the band builds a patient, hypnotic momentum: riff cycles gather heat, chants in Tamasheq rise and fall, and the rhythm locks into a loping stride that slowly pulls everyone in. The power sits in repetition and small shifts, in the blend of dust and electricity that defines their live sound. Over more than two decades, Tinariwen have carried this music from desert camps to major stages while keeping its clear, unvarnished lines.
This date leans into that language: guitar parts answering one another, bass anchoring the drift, lyrics sketching maps of home and loss. A set where trance-like grooves meet bare melodies, and the road through the dunes feels close, even in the heart of Edinburgh.
