On July 12, 2026 at Dabadaba (Donostia / San Sebastián), Scientist and Shanique Marie bring together two ways of understanding sound from the dancefloor.
Under the alias Scientist, Jamaican engineer Hopeton Overton Brown delivers a precise, stripped-down dub sculpted with bass and drums, breaks, silences and echoes that open up the space. Trained alongside King Tubby, he sharpened his ear in the early ’80s working with Junjo Lawes and Roots Radics, at a time when roots brushed up against dancehall. In live performance he treats the mix in real time as an instrument, playing with versions, vocal entrances and effects to reconfigure each track without losing the sound system’s pulse.
Based in London, Shanique Marie links singing, production and DJing in a flow that crosses broken beat, house, soul, jazz and R&B. She keeps the voice front and center while driving the groove: flexible rhythms, jazz-tinged harmonies and electronic textures that move from the club to more downtempo passages. Between original compositions and selections, her set refines the London intersection of vocal songwriting and club culture, with a rhythmic presence that always keeps the dancefloor in mind.
