Alceu Valença

On 5 November 2026 Alceu Valença will play at Melkweg in Amsterdam. The singer-songwriter from Pernambuco grew up with the rural sounds of Brazil’s Northeast, moved to Recife and later to Rio de Janeiro, where he became part of the MPB scene. Since his debut on the collective record Quadrafônico (1972) and his solo album Molhado de Suor (1974), he has been forging his own sound: poetry from the sertão carried by forró, frevo, baião, maracatu and coco, blended with rock, psychedelia and pop. Albums such as Coração Bobo, Cinco Sentidos, Anjo Avesso and Estação da Luz map out that hybrid course, with carnival rhythms alongside ballads and electric accents.

On stage Valença performs both with a full band and in smaller, acoustic line-ups. In either case his approach remains rooted in the forms and rhythms of the Northeast. His setlists combine carnival-like cadences with quieter numbers and open up his catalogue from then to now, where traditional grooves sit alongside more intimate songs. Long active on the scenes of Recife and Olinda and continually touring in Brazil and beyond, he presents a repertoire that places his origins at the centre while remaining receptive to influences beyond tradition.
