Alceu Valença

Born in São Bento do Una, in the state of Pernambuco, Alceu Valença grew up immersed in the rural music of Brazil’s Northeast before moving to Recife, where he studied law and began performing at late-1960s university festivals. He later settled in Rio de Janeiro, gravitated toward the MPB scene, and in 1972 recorded the collective album “Quadrafônico” alongside Geraldo Azevedo, Teca Calazans, and Naná Vasconcelos, marking his recording debut. His first solo album, “Molhado de Suor” (1974), showcases songwriting rooted in Northeastern popular poetry and a blend of forró, frevo, baião, maracatu, and coco with elements of rock, psychedelia, and pop. In the 1980s, albums such as “Coração Bobo” (1980), “Cinco Sentidos” (1981), “Anjo Avesso” (1983), and “Estação da Luz” (1985) reinforced this hybrid aesthetic, combining carnival rhythms, ballads, and electric arrangements. A longstanding presence on the stages of Recife and Olinda, especially during Carnival, Alceu Valença also maintained an active touring schedule in Brazil and abroad. From the 1990s onward, he developed numerous acoustic, small-ensemble projects that revisit his repertoire from a more intimate perspective, firmly anchored in the traditional forms of the Northeast.
