Info
On May 17, 2026, Le Plan in Ris-Orangis will host The Abyssinians alongside Big Youth for an evening steeped in Jamaican roots music. Born in Kingston in the late 1960s, the vocal trio founded by Bernard Collins and Donald Manning, later joined by Lynford Manning, became known for its tight harmonies and lyrics influenced by the Rastafari movement.
Their first track, "Satta Massagana," influenced by Carlton Manning’s "Happy Land," is a Rasta hymn sung partly in Amharic. "Declaration of Rights," featuring Leroy Sibbles on backing vocals, also made a significant impact in Jamaica before spreading internationally and being covered many times. After a split in 1978, the original lineup reunited in 1998 and recorded new material, including "African Princess."
On stage, The Abyssinians bring to life the ensemble singing and the compositions that marked the transition from rocksteady to roots. At Le Plan, they will present this repertoire sharing the bill with Big Youth.
