Abd Al Malik revisits, twenty years after its release, the album that redefined French rap, Gibraltar. Accompanied by musicians and dancers, Abd Al Malik offers a performance with this new show.
Gibraltar, reconciled identities, represents the fusion of visual art, the art of declamation (slam, rap and singing), dance and music.
I was born in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, my parents come from the Congo, and I grew up in a social housing estate in Strasbourg. I am therefore French, Alsatian, with African roots, and Muslim as well. When I released, in 2006, my second solo album, Gibraltar, it was indeed the notion of identity that I aimed to question. Drawing on musical samples drawn from the world’s musical heritage to create something new is to understand that we are all composite beings made of the very matter of this planet we share. It is thus through the channels of art and culture that I experiment with the universal in my own flesh.
Celebrating Gibraltar twenty years after its release is to underscore today the importance and urgency of reconciliation: a dialogue with oneself and with others.
