Info

Seventy-five years after the steel pan reshaped British music, Steel Pan Reimagined brings that story into the present with a night of new commissions and world premieres. Part of Steel Scenes, the concert traces the journey from TASPO’s landmark 1951 visit to today’s cross‑pollinated sounds, placing the instrument at the centre of a conversation between classical writing, jazz language, electronics and contemporary improvisation. The event takes place at Royal Festival Hall in London on 25 July 2026.

At the heart of the programme, Nabihah Iqbal explores the meeting point between electronic textures, guitars and songcraft, opening space for the pans to converse with modern studio sensibilities. Soweto Kinch, saxophonist and MC, brings his blend of jazz phrasing and rap cadence, shaping narrative pieces where groove and spoken word push the ensemble in fresh directions. Composer and arranger Delphina James adds finely drawn structures that foreground resonance and rhythm, while Marlon The Pannist anchors the evening with a player’s perspective, extending the instrument’s tone colours and percussive bite. More artists are to be announced, with each new work sketching a different route through the steel pan’s past, present and near future.
