The Wonder Stuff formed in 1986 in Stourbridge around Miles Hunt, cutting sharp alternative rock with punchy pop hooks before folding in folk accents when Martin Bell brought violin and banjo. From the early grebo days to records like The Eight Legged Groove Machine, Hup and Never Loved Elvis, then Construction for the Modern Idiot and on to 30 Goes Around the Sun and Better Being Lucky, the band has kept a melodic edge and an upfront drive. On stage, expect guitars that bite, a brisk tempo and songs that move easily across their catalogue.
Born in Oldham in the early 1980s, Inspiral Carpets came up on the Madchester wave with an organ-led sound that leans garage and psych while staying close to concise indie songwriting. Fronted first by Stephen Holt, then Tom Hingley, they tightened a danceable but grainy pulse across Life, The Beast Inside, Revenge of the Goldfish and Devil Hopping, before returning in the 2010s with their self-titled album. Live, the riffs are clean, the grooves unfussy and the sixties-tinged textures sit at the heart of the set.
