Info
On May 2, 2026 at 918 Bathurst in Toronto, The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis bring a quartet shaped by months on the road and a return to the studio. Saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joins the Messthetics core of Brendan Canty on drums, Joe Lally on bass and Anthony Pirog on guitar, a configuration that first landed on record with a self-titled release on Impulse!. Touring pushed their chemistry forward, and that momentum fed directly into Deface the Currency, their new second collaborative album, sparked by a simple intuition to capture what the stage was already revealing.
Live, the balance is clear: a rhythm section that locks and flexes, guitar lines that cut through and coil back, and a tenor sax voice that threads melody into open improvisation. Pieces can pivot from taut motifs to wider spaces, with the quartet leaning into interaction more than display. Expect new material to sit alongside road-tested themes, shaped in real time by dynamics and phrasing rather than fixed arrangements. It’s a set built on movement and interplay, the music tracing the path that led them from that first record to the sessions at Tonal Park and back onto the stage, where their ideas keep evolving.
