POiSON GiRL FRiEND
Behind POiSON GiRL FRiEND is Noriko Sekiguchi, a Japanese musician, producer, singer and DJ born in Yokohama and active from Tokyo. Her career links the club scene of the 1990s with a more dreamy, oblique strand of electronic pop. Launched initially in 1990 as the group The Poison Girl Friends, the project quickly became her solo alias, with the mini-album POiSON GiRL FRiENDS in 1991 and Melting Moment in 1992. POiSON GiRL FRiEND’s music crosses dream pop, synth-pop, trip-hop, ambient and gentle techno, marked by muffled textures, suspended melodies and occasional nods to French pop. The albums Shyness and Mr. Polyglot Remix, released in 1993, followed by Love Me in 1994, are linked to her work with Momus, Simon Fisher Turner and the Balanescu Quartet, in a context often associated with Shibuya-kei but not confined to it. After this initial period Noriko Sekiguchi also released music as Dark Eyed Kid and Kiss-O-Matic, before reviving POiSON GiRL FRiEND with rondoElectro in 2014 and das Gift in 2018. She remains active as a DJ in Tokyo clubs and on radio, with an NTS residency begun in 2023.
