Aterciopelados
Formed in Bogotá in the early 1990s around Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago, Aterciopelados is part of the Latin rock wave that blends electric guitars, punk heritage and Colombian popular music. Initially active under the name Delia y Los Aminoácidos, the duo quickly adopted the Aterciopelados identity and made its mark on the Spanish-language alternative scene with the album Con el Corazón en la Mano in 1993, followed by El Dorado in 1995 and La Pipa de la Paz in 1996, some of which were produced by Gustavo Santaolalla. Aterciopelados' music mixes rock in Spanish, pop, electronic touches and rhythms such as cumbia, vallenato or bambuco, serving lyrics that address urban life in Bogotá, Latin American identities, ecology and gender issues. Highly present on festival circuits in Latin America as well as in Europe and North America, the group alternated periods of collective activity with solo projects before returning with Río in 2008, Claroscura in 2018 and Tropiplop in 2021. Aterciopelados thus maintains a prominent place in Colombian alternative rock while regularly renewing their arrangements and collaborations over the decades.
