Six60
Formed in 2008 in Dunedin, New Zealand, within the student scene at the University of Otago, Six60 brought together musicians who named the project after the address of their shared house on Castle Street. Initially conceived as a live band, Six60 developed a sound that blends soul, pop rock, contemporary R&B, electronica and touches of drum and bass, with songwriting focused on melodies, choir-like choruses and a direct connection to the stage. After a self-produced EP in 2008, Six60 released the album Six60 in 2011, a second album also titled Six60 in 2015, a third Six60 in 2019 and Castle St in 2022. Across these records the band evolved its approach between pop songs, more electronic rhythms and tracks rooted in a soul and light-reggae aesthetic. Well established on the New Zealand circuit, Six60 has also played the country’s major stages, notably memorable shows at Western Springs and Eden Park. The group has taken part in several local collaborations and recorded songs in te reo Māori, reflecting an openly asserted cultural grounding. Long a five-piece, Six60 now continues as a quartet after founding drummer Eli Paewai’s departure in 2024.
