Based in London, the trio bar italia is part of the British indie rock scene of the early 2020s and comprises Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi and Sam Fenton. Initially connected to Dean Blunt’s network through the World Music label, bar italia released its early work discreetly — on cassettes and in digital editions — before issuing the albums Quarrel in 2020 and Bedhead in 2021, which established an aesthetic of muted guitars, minimalist bass lines and interwoven vocals. Their music moves between post-punk, slowcore and indie rock, with restrained tempos, deliberately raw production and fragmented songwriting that relies on repeating simple motifs rather than on virtuosity. In 2023 the band signed to Matador Records and released two albums the same year, Tracey Denim and The Twits, while stepping up touring across the UK, Europe and North America. On stage, bar italia adapts its songs into a direct, stripped-back format focused on the trio’s energy and a shared vocal dynamic.
