CARRTOONS

Under the name CARRTOONS, bassist, producer and composer Ben Carr has been developing in New York a music that sits at the crossroads of jazz, hip‑hop and contemporary soul. Anchored by the electric bass, the Carrtoons project constructs slow, melodic grooves where soft keyboards, jazz‑inspired harmonies and beatmaking‑derived rhythms settle into a format close to R&B songwriting. Initially active as a musician within the New York scene, Carrtoons gradually gained notice in the second half of the 2010s through instrumentals and short pieces released online, leading to collaborations with various singers and rappers from the independent soul and hip‑hop sphere. The albums “Saturday Morning” (2018) and “Homegrown” (2022) shape a discography that alternates instrumental tracks centred on bass motifs with more vocal songs. In studio and on stage, Carrtoons favors small ensemble formats, leaves ample room for improvisation, and maintains a precise, intimate production aesthetic that sits between the jazz‑funk heritage of the 1970s and more current textures close to lo‑fi and neo‑soul.
