Imbert Imbert
Mathias Imbert, who performs under the name Imbert Imbert, has since the mid-2000s been developing a solo project at the crossroads of French chanson, spoken word and a stage-writing aesthetic closely tied to the double bass, his main instrument. A graduate of Montpellier Conservatory, he first played in several outfits such as Jim Murple Memorial, De Rien, Split or Scénic Railway before launching Imbert Imbert in 2005. His universe rests on a spoken-sung voice, texts that are dark or offbeat, and a minimal accompaniment where the double bass occupies a central place, with an aesthetic that blends realist song, contemporary cabaret and acoustic rock tension. Débat de boue was released in 2007, followed by Bouh! in 2010, Sois mort et tais-toi in 2013, Viande d’Amour in 2016 and Mémoires d’un enfant de 300 000 ans in 2020. Over the years, Imbert Imbert has toured chanson and contemporary music stages in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, in a format where stage presence, orality and the direct relationship to the text occupy as much space as musical composition.
