Wookie
Born in London, Jason Chue records under the name Wookie and has developed a UK garage approach that mixes garage house, British electronic music, broken rhythms, supple basslines and an R&B and soul heritage. Active from the early 1990s, Wookie first worked as a producer for Wayne Marshall on 90 Degrees and Rising in 1994, then alongside Soul II Soul and Jazzie B, while also producing remixes for artists from R&B, hip‑hop and pop. His name became established in the late 1990s with the track "Scrappy" and with productions released under the alias Exemen, notably the remix of Gabrielle's "Sunshine." In 2000 Wookie released several notable singles, including "Battle" with Lain, and the album Wookie, the only studio album issued under that name. After the commercial decline of UK garage, Wookie continued working as a producer and DJ, releasing new tracks such as "The Hype" with Eliza Doolittle in 2013, "Higher" with Zak Abel in 2014 and "Battle 2.0" in 2015. Remaining active on the club circuit, he has played venues like Fabric in London, Berghain in Berlin and the Warehouse Project in Manchester, and his style still combines rhythmic precision, soulful melodies and the tension characteristic of London club music.
