WHY?
Born around Yoni Wolf between Cincinnati, where he grew up, and the San Francisco Bay Area’s indie scene, WHY? took shape in Berkeley in the late 1990s in the wake of anticon., the label whose project was among its early cores. Initially used as a solo name by Yoni Wolf, WHY? became a full-fledged band in the mid-2000s with his brother Josiah Wolf, Doug McDiarmid, and later other musicians depending on the period. WHY?’s music blends experimental hip-hop, indie rock, folk, and chamber pop, with a gradual shift from a very rhythmic spoken word toward more melodic songs, without abandoning dense, associative, and often introspective writing. After Oaklandazulasylum in 2003, Elephant Eyelash in 2005 clearly marks the shift to a band format, extended by Alopecia in 2008 and Eskimo Snow in 2009, two records that establish a more organic sound, between guitars, soft percussion, and nearly spoken phrasing. Mumps, Etc. appears in 2012, followed by Moh Lhean in 2017, AOKOHIO in 2019, and The Well I Fell Into in 2024. Parallel to WHY?, Yoni Wolf has also contributed to projects tied to the American underground such as cLOUDDEAD, Reaching Quiet, or Greenthink, which illuminates WHY?’s unique place between indie rap, oblique rock, and poetic writing.
