Trepaneringsritualen
Born in Gothenburg, Trepaneringsritualen took shape in 2008 around Thomas Martin Ekelund, initially as a solo project and later with Peter Johan Nijland from 2017. The name Trepaneringsritualen evokes an imagery of ritual, the body and transformation, consistent with music situated between industrial, dark ambient, death industrial and noise. The project develops a writing based on drones, slow or martial pulses, abrasive soundscapes and a voice often treated as an incantation rather than singing in the conventional sense. From Ritualer, blot och botgöring (2008), then Veil the World (2011), Deathward, to The Womb (2012) and Perfection & Permanence (2014), Trepaneringsritualen refined a dense, physical and ritualistic aesthetic, later extended by Kainskult (2017), ᛉᛦ - Algir; eller Algir i Merkstave (2019) and the two parts The Totality Of Death (A) and The Totality Of Death (Ω) released in 2024. Since its beginnings Trepaneringsritualen has circulated the industrial, noise and experimental scenes in Europe and beyond, while multiplying crossovers with related artists and projects such as Sutekh Hexen and Mz.412. In parallel, Thomas Martin Ekelund also pursues other activities under the names Dead Letters Spell Out Dead Words and Teeth.
