Unearth

At the end of the 1990s, Boston, Massachusetts’s hardcore and metal scene saw the rise of Unearth, a metalcore band blending melodic riffs, thrash influences and structures drawn from melodic death metal. Formed in 1998, the band first made an impression with the EP Above the Fall of Man (1999) and confirmed their position with the debut album The Stings of Conscience (2001), establishing Unearth within the American metal landscape. The release of The Oncoming Storm (2004), followed by III: In the Eyes of Fire (2006) and The March (2008), accompanied an intense period of touring across North American and European metal and hardcore stages, including frequent festival appearances. On Darkness in the Light (2011) and Watchers of Rule (2014), Unearth emphasized the balance between rapid passages, twin‑guitar harmonies and massive breakdowns while retaining a direct, shouted vocal delivery. The albums Extinction(s) (2018) and The Wretched; The Ruinous (2023) continue this aesthetic, occasionally steering toward a darker, more technical metal without abandoning the metalcore foundation that has defined Unearth since their beginnings.
