The Smith Street Band

Formed in Melbourne in 2009 around Wil Wagner, The Smith Street Band occupies a space that blends melodic punk rock, indie rock and folk punk. Their songs are fast, with direct choruses and lyrics focused on everyday life, relationships and mental health. First noticed on Australia’s DIY scene, the band developed a sound where pub-punk energy meets more introspective touches and an emo-adjacent sensitivity. They released No One Gets Lost Anymore in 2011 and Sunshine & Technology in 2012, before broadening their range on Throw Me in the River (2014) and More Scared of You Than You Are of Me (2017), where the approach became wider without abandoning the early tension. The Smith Street Band continued this evolution with Don’t Waste Your Anger (2020) and Life After Football (2022). Over the years the group has toured extensively across Australia, Europe and North America, moving between independent venues, rock festivals and punk stages, while maintaining an identity marked by Wil Wagner’s nervy vocal style and a balance between electric urgency and more open melodies.
