The Icicle Works

Formed in Liverpool in the early 1980s, The Icicle Works initially organized as a trio around Ian McNabb, with Chris Layhe on bass and Chris Sharrock on drums. The band emerged on the British independent scene with a sound that blended post‑punk, new wave, neo‑psychedelia and melodic rock, built on chiming guitars, pop choruses and a darker tension typical of the era. Early singles, including “Nirvana” and “Love Is a Wonderful Colour” in 1983, quickly gave The Icicle Works a distinct identity. The debut album, The Icicle Works, was released in 1984, followed by If You Want to Defeat Your Enemy Sing His Song in 1987, Blind in 1988 and Permanent Damage in 1990. Through lineup changes, Ian McNabb remained the project's focal point, while The Icicle Works broadened its songwriting toward a bigger, sometimes more acoustic rock, without abandoning its independent roots. The band moved between the British scene and the American alternative network, before the project ended in the early 1990s.
