The Pharcyde
Born in the late 1980s in South Central Los Angeles, The Pharcyde initially brought together four MCs from dance and television choreography—Imani, Slimkid3, Bootie Brown and Fatlip—before moving toward an alternative hip‑hop defined by humor, introspection and a strong taste for soul and jazz samples. Discovered on the Californian scene, the group recorded for the Delicious Vinyl label and in 1992 released the album Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, supported by several singles that established The Pharcyde in the early‑1990s American rap landscape. In 1995, Labcabincalifornia developed a more melancholic songwriting approach and a softer production style, to which Jay Dee—later a prominent figure of the Detroit sound—contributed, confirming the quartet’s turn toward hip‑hop with flexible rhythmic structures, detailed narratives and often autobiographical tones. The successive departures of Fatlip and then Slimkid3 later altered The Pharcyde’s lineup, which continued with Plain Rap in 2000 and Humboldt Beginnings in 2004, while remaining active on stage through international tours, club dates and appearances at various hip‑hop festivals and events dedicated to 1990s rap culture.
