Digable Planets
Formed in Brooklyn in the late 1980s, Digable Planets brings together rapper and producer Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving, and Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, who comes from a Brazilian family settled in the United States. Situated within the jazz rap and alternative hip‑hop currents, the trio crafted a sound on Digable Planets built from jazz samples, supple rhythms, and a relaxed delivery that blends African‑American references, political awareness, and urban everyday narratives. Their debut album, “Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space)” (1993), established this aesthetic, propelled by the single “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat),” which won a Grammy in 1994. The following year, “Blowout Comb” (1994) pursued a darker direction, with stronger emphasis on themes tied to Black movements and social struggles. After splitting in the mid‑1990s—during which Butler notably continued with Shabazz Palaces—Digable Planets reunited intermittently from the 2000s for tours and festivals, documented among other releases by the compilation “Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles” (2005), cementing their place in the history of independent American hip‑hop.
