The Jacksons
Hailing from Gary, Indiana, the Jackson family brothers first came to prominence in the late 1960s as The Jackson 5, blending Detroit soul, pop and rhythm and blues within the Motown catalog. With Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael Jackson at the forefront — and Randy Jackson joining the lineup in the mid‑1970s — the group developed a repertoire built on pronounced bass lines, tight vocal harmonies and an accessible melodic sensibility. In 1976 the group left Motown for CBS/Epic and adopted the name The Jacksons, inaugurating a new phase in which they gained greater artistic autonomy. The albums The Jacksons (1976) and Goin’ Places (1977) draw on a soul and disco sound notably shaped in Philadelphia, while Destiny (1978) and Triumph (1980) represent a shift toward compositions and productions largely handled by the Jackson brothers, spanning funk, urban pop and ballads. The Jacksons then released Victory (1984), which reunited Michael and Jermaine with the rest of the band, followed by 2300 Jackson Street (1989), centered on Jackie, Tito and Randy and featuring family contributions. Active on North American and international stages, The Jacksons alternated large‑scale tours in the 1970s and 1980s with later reunions, gradually building a repertoire that bridges the soul legacy of the Jackson 5 and a more contemporary pop‑funk approach.
