Stef Bos
Born in Veenendaal, the Netherlands, in 1961, Stef Bos has developed his work across Dutch, Belgian and South African stages, where he settled permanently from the 1990s. Trained at the Herman Teirlinck studio in Antwerp, he began by writing for other performers, notably the song “Door de wind” for Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 1989, before turning to his own projects. His first album, “Is dit nu later” (1990), established him in the Dutch singer-songwriter scene with an intimate, narrative repertoire, propelled by the track “Papa,” which struck a chord in the Netherlands and Flanders. Over the years Stef Bos has released multiple albums and toured extensively, moving from cabaret-like formats to a more pared-down style between acoustic pop and lyric-driven songs. His move to South Africa marked a new phase in his career, with compositions in Dutch and Afrikaans and numerous collaborations with South African musicians who brought rhythmic colours and local influences into his music. Stef Bos’s lyrics address family, memory, identity and spiritual questions in simple, direct language; his concerts alternate spoken narration, intimate songs and more orchestrated pieces, maintaining a continuity between studio work and stage presence.
