The Chameleons

Formed in the early 1980s in Middleton on the outskirts of Manchester, The Chameleons emerged from the British post‑punk wave with a spacious, melodic guitar sound. Centered on Mark Burgess (vocals and bass) with Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding on guitars and John Lever on drums, the band crafted songs where prominent bass lines, echoing guitar motifs and a taut vocal create a dark yet melodic atmosphere, often likened to indie rock and new wave. After several singles and regular appearances on English stages, they released Script of the Bridge in 1983, followed by What Does Anything Mean? Basically in 1985 and Strange Times in 1986—albums that established an aesthetic of expansive moods and relatively conventional song structures. The late‑1980s split interrupted this course, before a reformation from 2000 led to international tours and new recordings, notably Strip in 2000 (a collection of stripped‑down versions), Why Call It Anything in 2001 and This Never Ending Now in 2002. Since then The Chameleons have alternated periods of live activity and hiatuses, the name being carried by Mark Burgess in various lineups, always rooted in that blend of post‑punk, atmospheric rock and introspective guitar pop.
