The Celtic Social Club
Born in the mid-2010s around the Vieilles Charrues festival in Carhaix, Brittany, The Celtic Social Club brings together French, Breton and Irish musicians around a single idea: to refresh Celtic heritage in the format of a rock band. The project, notably driven by drummer and producer Manu Masko, mixes traditional tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and Galicia with original compositions, delivered in a style that moves between rock, folk and pop, sometimes touching on reggae or blues. The Celtic Social Club operates as a collective with a flexible lineup, where guest singers and instrumentalists regularly renew the sound while keeping a core of rock rhythms, strings and bagpipes. The first studio album, simply titled The Celtic Social Club, was released in 2014, followed by an acoustic record and then A New Kind of Freedom in 2017 and From Babylon to Avalon in 2019, which confirmed a shift toward more pop-oriented, melodic songwriting. On stage, The Celtic Social Club prefers festivals and general venues to strictly folk circuits, placing the group in a contemporary music landscape where Celtic tradition becomes one material among others for crafting modern songs.
