Red Cardell
Born in Quimper in the early 1990s around Jean-Pierre Riou and Jean-Michel Moal, Red Cardell has since 1992 developed a music that links indie rock, chanson and Breton traditions in an aesthetic often described as ethno-rock or Celtic rock. The group first formed as a trio, before evolving over the decades toward looser formats, while keeping a strong Breton anchor and a marked taste for crossing with world music, folk, blues, or rhythms of popular dance. Red Cardell's trajectory has largely been shaped on stage, in Brittany, in France and abroad, with numerous creations and regular collaborations, notably with Bagad Kemper, but also with Pierre Sangra, Ronan Le Bars or, in other contexts, artists from rock, trad and chanson. Among the verifiable discographic landmarks are Rouge (1993), Douleur (1996), 3 (1997), Rock’n roll Comédie (2000), Sans fard (2003), Naître (2006), Soleil blanc (2010), Un monde tout à l’envers (2016), Courir (2018), Climatik (2021) and Bordel (2024). Today, the band is composed of Jean-Pierre Riou, Pierre Sangra, Hibu Corbel and Fred Lucas, and Red Cardell continues a body of work where guitars, violin, rock rhythms and Breton colors mingle in songs mainly in French, with a constant attention to movement, to dance and to the collective.
