Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Emerging from the late-1990s London scene, Sophie Ellis-Bextor first gained attention as the singer of indie rock group Theaudience before embarking on a solo career centered on pop and dance music. Born in London in 1979, she transitioned from indie to a nu-disco and dance-pop aesthetic through her collaboration with Italian producer Spiller on the 2000 single “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love),” which firmly established her on the European club circuit. Her debut solo album Read My Lips (2001), followed by Shoot from the Hip (2003) and Trip the Light Fantastic (2007), developed a blend of electronic pop, disco and new wave influences, driven by direct, melodic songwriting. With Make a Scene (2011) and her collaboration with Armin van Buuren on “Not Giving Up on Love,” she maintained ties to club culture while moving toward a more mainstream sound. From Wanderlust (2014) and Familia (2016) onward, her work took a more orchestral, songwriter-focused turn, incorporating elements of folk, baroque pop and more organic instrumentation. The Song Diaries (2019) revisited her catalogue in orchestral arrangements, while Songs from the Kitchen Disco (2020) extended the at-home performances she streamed during the pandemic. With Hana (2023), Sophie Ellis-Bextor continues to explore a pop register where dancefloor heritage coexists with more atmospheric arrangements.
