SonnyJim
Established in the British underground rap scene since the mid-2000s, SonnyJim is from Birmingham, England, and blends British-style writing with a strong American East Coast aesthetic in his music. A rapper and producer of Indian origin, SonnyJim has developed a calm, seemingly relaxed rap style, with dense lyrics full of images of luxury, excess and cultural references, over productions that are often dark, subdued or boom bap. After early projects such as Trading Standards (2008), The Purple Patch (2010) and The Psychonaut EP (2011), SonnyJim made his name on the UK scene alongside artists like Jehst and Stig of the Dump, while launching his label EatGood. Mud in My Malbec (2016) marked an important milestone, followed by a series of collaborations that placed him in a constant dialogue between British and American scenes, with names such as MF DOOM, Jay Electronica, Conway the Machine and Roc Marciano. In 2022 SonnyJim released White Girl Wasted with The Purist, then continued in 2023 with Ortolan and Armagnac, recorded with Lee Scott. In 2024 SonnyJim also participated in the trio Pataka Boys with PAV4N and Kartik for the album Thugs from Amritsar, a project at the crossroads of UK rap, transatlantic flows and South Asian influences.
