Saian Supa Crew
Formed in the mid‑1990s, Saian Supa Crew brought together several MCs from the Paris region, notably from Explicit Samouraï, OFX and Simple Spirit, in a collective oriented toward French rap, ragga and dancehall. The group developed an aesthetic strongly focused on the voice, combining rapid flows, sung passages, reggae references and beatboxing—particularly by Sly Johnson—alongside members such as Vicelow, Leeroy Kesiah, Sir Samuel, Feniksi and Specta. Saian Supa Crew first made its mark on Paris’s underground scene through freestyles, concerts and radio appearances, before the release of KLR in 1999, the first album that established the project beyond the local circle. X Raisons in 2001 and Hold Up in 2005 extended Saian Supa Crew’s recording activity, with a style of rap that broadened the emphasis on social themes, observations of everyday life and a blend of rap, soul and reggae. Highly visible on tour and at festivals in France and across Europe during the first half of the 2000s, Saian Supa Crew later suspended its regular collective activities, allowing members to pursue solo careers while leaving a lasting imprint on the history of French rap.
