Rosanne Cash
Born in Memphis in 1955 and raised largely in California, Rosanne Cash is rooted in American country music while expanding it to include pop, folk and Americana. The daughter of Johnny Cash, she began touring with her father’s band in the mid-1970s and recorded her first album in 1978. She established herself in the early 1980s with Right or Wrong (1980) and Seven Year Ache (1981), albums that blended contemporary country with pop-oriented songwriting. Living in Nashville throughout the 1980s, Cash refined a style where electric guitars, mid-tempo ballads and intimate storytelling converge on records such as King’s Record Shop (1987). With Interiors (1990) and The Wheel (1993) her work became more introspective and closer to singer-songwriter folk, before a phase in which she devoted more time to writing books and essays. Beginning with Rules of Travel (2003) and Black Cadillac (2006), often made with producer-musician John Leventhal, she adopted a more stripped-down aesthetic focused on voice, lyrics and acoustic soundscapes. The List (2009), The River & The Thread (2014) and She Remembers Everything (2018) continued this exploration of memory, the American South and musical lineage, making Rosanne Cash a distinctive figure at the crossroads of singer-songwriter craft, country and contemporary folk.
